DKSH keeps its promise on Kamala

Total devastation: Kamala School in Phuket province after the tsunami catastrophe.

The tsunami that wreaked havoc in the early hours of Sunday, December 26, 2004 destroyed much of the beachfront property in the vicinity of Kamala, Phuket province. Kamala School was almost totally destroyed by the tsunami.

There was an urgent need for a new school and DKSH has taken responsibility for this project, funded and controlled by DKSH. DKSH is also committed to establishing a long-term supportive relationship with Kamala School. The DKSH-sponsored reconstruction of the Kamala School in Phuket was carried out under the royal patronage of His Majesty the King of Thailand. Following the ground-breaking festive ceremony in March 2006 excellent progress was made during summer and fall on rebuilding the school.

In mid-March 2007, just a few days after Kamala pupils departed for their long summer holidays, the construction team of the Royal Thai Army Engineering Corps put the final touches to the façade of the main school building and finished decorating the classrooms. When the children returned in May, they were delighted to start the new term in a brand new building with modern facilities.

The official hand-over of the building by DKSH to the Kamala School Authorities took place on Monday, June 12, when a commemorative plaque on the wall of the main entrance was unveiled. To "green” the landscape around the new building, ten Golden Shower trees were planted by the Thailand Country Management Team.

Finally, to round off the day, the children of Kamala school were involved in an action-packed sports and play program, courtesy of Right To Play. "Right To Play” is a humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to teach life skills and health education, and empower communities to grow stronger and more peaceful. Currently, Right To Play is active in 22 countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, targeting communities with the aim of contributing to development goals set by the United Nations and governments.

In 2006, DKSH made a commitment to Right To Play to match grants from UNICEF to Thailand for two years. The new partnership will enhance the healthy physical, social and emotional development of 3,000 children at 20 schools in Thailand's tsunami-affected communities. One of the first projects is the cooperation on the reconstruction of Kamala School.
